They didn't mention why they call it a "Hell Hole". My guess would be for marketing. However I did mention the place to a friend who knows a bit about geology. I described the limestone to him, and he said limestone can form naturally like that and it doesn't mean that it was quarried.

Actually, did anyone ever say why, exactly, they call that hole a "hell hole?"

Hey Paul - thanks for the report! I must say that this gives me a moment's pause, since we still haven't been there. I gotta say the name is probably what makes me most interested, more than what is actually there. However, you have no idea how happy I am to hear that there really is a hell hole!

We checked out Hell Holes nature trails today and it really wasn’t worth it. Basically they charge $6.50 (no INTERAC….so have cash) to walk a 3.2 km trail through the forest where at one time people quarried limestone (which accounts for the “interesting” rock formations). The “Hell Hole” itself is somewhat interesting, however once you get down there with your $1.50 rented flashlight you can tell that its not a natural cave as you can see the old entrance to the cave which has been filled in/blocked off with rocks and stuff. Over-all, not worth it.
